Umbrella back home: a drying place before storage

3 min read

A wet umbrella pushed straight into a closed sleeve is easily forgotten there. An umbrella opened in the middle of the hallway gets in everyone's way. The household needs one agreed drying place and a simple understanding of who returns the dry umbrella.

The child's job can be to place the umbrella at the drying station, check later and return it once dry. An adult first demonstrates your particular model and chooses a place that does not block the route through the room.

Decide where the water lands

Choose a surface the household has agreed can tolerate drips. An existing drip tray or another suitable arrangement can collect the water. Do not leave the child to improvise with a little towel on a surface you have not considered.

Try the place with one umbrella. Can people still walk past and open the door normally? The drying station needs to work while the household uses the room rather than only when the hallway is empty.

Follow the model's drying arrangement

Some umbrellas can remain open in an agreed space, while others need a different arrangement following their manufacturer's guidance. An adult demonstrates the method. The child can repeat it without forcing the mechanism or pulling on the ribs.

Put the sleeve beside it in its own dry place. Do not tuck it inside a wet umbrella. If both umbrella and sleeve are damp, keep them apart until both are ready.

Make returning obvious

Choose a fixed home for dry umbrellas, perhaps labelled with a simple drawing. A backpack umbrella returns to the backpack by agreement. The household's shared umbrella can have its own hook or container.

Agree a check at a time the child will actually be home. If the umbrella remains wet, the child leaves it and reports this. There is no need to wait beside the drying station until everything finishes.

An example after a rainy afternoon

Iver comes home with a small umbrella. He puts it at the station his mum demonstrated and leaves the sleeve separate. After supper, it is still damp, so he reports it. His mum returns it the next morning. Iver has completed the agreed check even though the return happens later.

If two umbrellas do not fit

Do not put one wet umbrella on top of another. An adult chooses another temporary space or spreads out drying. Capacity needs to fit the household's use; the child can report a full station without solving the entire problem.

Finished means the umbrella is at the agreed drying place, its sleeve is separate when needed and its status is reported. In Kroni, use “Put the umbrella to dry and check later”. Agree whether returning belongs in the same task or goes to whoever is home when the umbrella is dry.
