The video call was unexpected: ask before bringing your child on screen

2 min read

Grandma video-calls while your child is playing with a sibling. The adult answers and turns the phone towards the child: “Look who wants to say hello!” Your child did not want to stop or appear on camera then. An unexpected call need not become a settled arrangement for their participation.

Answer your own part first

You can greet Grandma and say: “Our child is doing something else. I will ask whether they want to join.” Avoid announcing a yes before receiving an answer. If you cannot speak either, offer to call back.

Ask your child specifically: “Would you like to say hello on video, talk briefly or continue what you are doing?” Offer only formats you can actually arrange. A child can want conversation without being visible.

Give the alternatives actual meaning

Clarify the reply like this:

Child’s answer Adult follow-up
Wants to greet now Agree how briefly or how long
Wants to talk without a picture Arrange if the call format allows
Wants to talk later Check a time with both people
Declines today Tell the relative without requiring another date

A brief hello should not automatically become the rest of the call. Let your child finish after the agreed contribution.

Adults explain the change

If Grandma says “but I want to see you”, you can reply: “Our child is not joining on camera now. I can continue talking with you.” Avoid asking the child to comfort a relative by participating against their preference.

If arranging another call, check the timing before promising it. Tell your child what you arranged and ask again about participation then. A possible Sunday conversation is not already confirmed by the child.

If you already pointed the camera at them, move it and say: “I did not ask first. I will ask next time.” It need not become a lengthy discussion during the call.

Try this small change at the next unexpected ring: answer for yourself, ask your child and confirm the participation actually wanted. Contact with a relative can continue without every call requiring a spontaneous camera appearance from everyone at home.
