The soft-toy shelf: a low row showing each friend’s place
By Erik Nilsen · Kroni2 min read
Soft toys hidden behind other soft toys are difficult to find. A tall soft pile may also fall when the child retrieves the character in the middle. Make a low, recognisable row on one accessible shelf. The job covers toys stored there without choosing which friends the child should keep.
Agree who belongs on the shelf
Start with soft toys from one agreed location. A bedtime companion or characters in ongoing play retain their own homes. The child understands that distinction better than a random size-based sorting system.
Put the selected toys on a clean surface. Anything needing agreed cleaning or repair goes separately to an adult. Avoid packing those among ready toys as though the next user should deal with them without a message.
Make room for their shapes
Large characters need their own width and should not hide smaller ones. Try a short row where the child can see each face or another familiar feature. A toy that will not stand can lie in its agreed place. They do not all need the same pose.
Use the shelf's existing space. Avoid adding hanging cords or making a taller pile simply to squeeze everything in. If the space is too small, agree another accessible group with an adult.
Selma has a large rabbit and four little animals. The rabbit lies on the left, while the four small animals form a low row on the right. Her bedtime bear remains in bed. Selma can point to the fox and retrieve it without pulling the rabbit or other little animals along.
Test returning it as well
Return the fox after the trial. A space that works only for removal, but leaves no recognisable gap for return, soon becomes another pile. Increase the gaps slightly or use fewer characters in the row if returning the fox requires pushing.
Finished means agreed shelf friends visible, other friends in their homes and one successful removal and return. “Arrange the low soft-toy shelf” in Kroni can end there. The child does not have to explain why a particular character matters or give anything away for this storage to work.
